Six Flags Didn't Keep Us From Thinking About Our Problems

Don't go to an amusement park when you know it won't distract you from your worries, especially if you don't like most of the rides anyway.

My husband had just finished his doctorate and knew he was not going to get an academic job. He was waiting to hear about a couple of job possibilities when we were invited by friends to spend the day at Six Flags in Gurnee. The weather was only so-so, we are not big on roller coasters and spinning rides, and the place was crowded so you had to wait in long lines. The food was terrible and expensive. We spent most of our time wondering about whether he would get phone calls about jobs. This was in the days before cell phones, so we wouldn't know anything until we got home. While we were happy to be with our friends, the anxiety, combined with the other factors made for a day that was less than enjoyable.

  1. I went to an amusement park with friends once, since they liked it, and did my utmost best to enjoy myself. It just didn't work. There is basically n othing that agrees with me in those places and an awful lot - from the hot nausea-inducing pavement to the screaming greed-is-our-family value commercialism to the crowds and the nasty, nasty food.
